Workshop on sharing experiences in master planning, SABO project design, and construction of the pilot SABO Dam
(En.sonla.gov.vn) On February 18, in Muong La district, the Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention, in coordination with the JICA Vietnam Office, organized a workshop on sharing experiences in master planning, SABO project design, and construction of the pilot SABO Dam. Attending the workshop were Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Lieu, Head of the Planning and Investment Management Department of the Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention; representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA); representative of the leaders of the Irrigation Sub-Departments of 6 Northern mountainous provinces and Muong La district.

At the workshop, delegates heard the Overview and results of the Technical Cooperation Project “Improving the Capacity to Reduce Flash Flood and Landslide Risks in the Northern Mountainous Region.” funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency - JICA using non-refundable ODA capital from the Government of Japan implemented in the two pilot provinces of Son La and Yen Bai. In Muong La district, the project has implemented the construction of the pilot Sabo dam in Pieng village, Nam Pam commune, located on the Nam Pam stream with an open concrete structure, 51m wide, 9m high, with a total capital of 8.2 billion VND. The project is to be a basis for the Vietnamese Government to refer to and develop technical standards for the design of the Sabo dam project before implementing the construction of other Sabo dams in high-risk areas towards realizing the planning for natural disaster prevention, control, and irrigation for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050.

At the workshop, delegates also shared experiences in sediment disaster prevention and control by Japanese experts. The workshop is an opportunity for scientists and managers to discuss solutions to prevent flash floods and mudflows, thereby promoting the replication and dissemination of this project in Vietnam in the future.
