Currently, the province has over 84,000 hectares of various fruit crops, producing about 455,000 tons annually. It also boasts more than 20,000 hectares of Arabica coffee, 6,000 hectares of tea, 5,000 hectares of rubber, and 10,000 hectares of sugarcane. Livestock numbers exceed 490,000, with thousands of hectares dedicated to aquaculture. Additionally, the province maintains 280 food safety supply chains, 294 export-approved planting zones, 145 VietGAP and GlobalGAP certified agricultural facilities, and 560 processing plants.
To develop agricultural production and consumption linkages, Son La Province has focused on implementing Government Decree No. 57/2018/ND-CP, which encourages investment in agriculture and rural areas. The Provincial People's Council has also introduced policies to boost agricultural and rural investment. Various provincial departments have effectively coordinated with district and city authorities to promote products through media, guide safe production practices, and increase public awareness and support for the province's agricultural and seafood supply chain development initiatives.
To develop large-scale agro-processing, the province is building supply regions for processing plants such as Doveco Son La, ICFood Van Ho, and Nafoods Northwest. By April 2024, 354.3 hectares of crops will be dedicated to supplying Doveco Son La, including 236.4 hectares of pineapples, 96 hectares of passion fruit, 3 hectares of sweet corn (still to be planted), and 18.9 hectares of spinach. Doveco Son La has also procured over 400 tons of bananas for processing and export to Russia and Japan, with processed exports reaching 290 tons worth USD 271,600 in the first four months of the year. This includes 100 tons of pineapples (USD 102,880), 80 tons of sweet corn (USD 32,920), and 110 tons of soybeans and vegetables (USD 135,800). Meanwhile, ICFood Van Ho continues to process cabbage, sweet mustard, Chinese cabbage, mustard greens, and carrots, with nearly 917 tons of vegetables processed in the first four months. Nafoods Northwest has started passion fruit processing for the 2024 season, purchasing over 300 tons of raw materials since the beginning of the year.
Establishing linkages between enterprises, cooperatives, and farmers in agricultural production and processing is emerging as a crucial approach for sustainable agricultural development in the province.
