Cooperatives - A key bridge in the value chain of agricultural production and consumption
(en.sonla.gov.vn) In the context of Vietnams agricultural transformation towards modernity, sustainability, and high-added value, the cooperative economy (HTX) is increasingly asserting its role as a pillar in organizing the production and consumption of agricultural products. With dynamism and creativity, cooperatives have become midwives to help farmers improve productivity and product quality, expand consumption markets, and enhance the value of Vietnamese agricultural products, especially in Son La province - a locality with great agricultural potential - the cooperative economy has been playing a key role in developing commodity agriculture and increasing peoples income.
Several cooperatives and agricultural cooperatives in Son La (2020 - 2025).
Typical cooperatives such as Quyet Tam Safe Vegetable Cooperative (Moc Chau), Bich Thao Coffee Cooperative (Mai Son), Chieng Hac Green-skin Mango Cooperative (Yen Chau), ..., have applied science and technology, growing according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards. Agricultural products not only serve domestic consumption but also aim for export, contributing to increasing value. The province currently has over 20,000 hectares of fruit trees produced according to safe processes, and many growing areas have been granted growing area codes for export to demanding markets such as China, the USA, Japan, and Korea.
Agricultural product consumption - From passive to active
One of the breakthroughs of cooperatives in Son La is the initiative to connect markets. Thanks to the support of local authorities and trade promotion programs, cooperatives have actively participated in fairs and signed contracts with supermarket systems such as Big C, MM Mega Market, Vinmart, etc, as well as e-commerce platforms like Voso, Postmart, and Lazada.
In 2024, Son La exported over 26,000 tons of agricultural products to more than 20 countries and territories, earning hundreds of billions of VND in revenue. Most of the export output is through cooperatives with large-scale production capacity, ensuring clear traceability.
Notably, Chieng Mung Safe Agricultural Cooperative (Mai Son) is one of the typical units exporting mangoes to Japan with a selling price of 3-4 times higher than the domesIncreasing income, improving farmers' lives
The development of cooperatives has contributed to significantly increased the income of members. According to statistics, the average income of agricultural cooperative members in Son La is 65-90 million VND per capita, 1.5-2 times higher than before.tic market.

Not only do farming activities, but several cooperatives also invest in processing, post-harvest preservation, and building local agricultural product brands. For example, the Me Village Agricultural Cooperative (Thuan Chau) produces organic tea, processes it into tea bags and instant tea, etc., sells it to the supermarket system, exporting it to Europe.
Towards modern and sustainable development
Cooperatives are not only a production organization model but also a core force in restructuring the agricultural sector. With the support of programs such as OCOP, One Commune One Product, and the Collective Economic Development Program, many cooperatives have gradually developed stable raw material areas, connecting the value chain from "field to table.".
By 2025, there will be more than 250 OCOP products in the province. Of these, over 70% will be produced and branded by cooperatives. It sees the increasingly clear role of cooperatives in ensuring the quality of local agricultural products.

Son La aims to have at least 1,200 effective cooperatives by 2030, and 80% of agricultural cooperatives join the agricultural production-consumption chain. It is a crucial step to realize the goal of developing ecological agriculture, modern rural areas, and civilized farmers.
The cooperative economy in Son La not only contributes to restructuring agricultural production but is a crucial factor in developing the rural economy, improving people's lives, and enhancing the value of local agricultural products. In the coming time, with synchronous policies from the State and proactive innovation from within, cooperatives will continue to affirm their position as a key bridge in the value chain of sustainable agricultural production and consumption.
